In the ShoBox main event, Diego Magdaleno (22-0) defeated Fernando Beltran (36-8-1) by technical knockout in their super featherweight match. Magdaleno is a sharp puncher that was clearly faster and stronger than his opponent. Diego was knocked down in the fourth, but he came back very strong. Beltran was hit by a borderline low blow in the next round. By the seventh, Magdaleno was still coming strong evantually scoring a knockdown called when Beltran was only held up by the ropes after being walloped. Beltran got up and continued to try to fight, but his corner literally threw in the towel landing on the referee prompting him to stop the bout. The official stoppage was 2:28 into round seven.
In the co-feature for ShoBox, Johnny Garcia (12-0) defeated Yordenis Ugas (11-1) by split decision in a difficult fight to score. Ugas seemed to be more skilled and had more power in the first half of the fight including dropping Garcia in round 5. Garcia was a very busy and game fighter that ended the fight with more gas in the tank than Ugas which faded some late. Steve Farhood of Showtime scored the fight for Ugas, but was not critical of the decision.
Bellator 62 featured the lightweight quarterfinals tonight. In the final bout, Lloyd Woodard defeated Patricky Pitbull (favorite name of the night) by submission from a kimura in round two. Pitbull suffered a shot to the groin early in round one, but recovered and rocked Woodard later. However by the next round, Woodard hooked Pitbull into a kimura forcing him to tap apearing to dislocate his elbow in what was a competitive and entertaining bout.
The only fight to go the distance in the Bellator 62 lightweight quarterfinals was Thiago Michel Pereira Silva's win over Rene Nazare by split decision. In another quarterfinal, Brent Weedman at his lightest fighting weight ever defeated J.J. Ambrose via submission by shoulder choke in round two. This match involved a lot of grappling and wrestling with some meaningful strikes here and there. Also, Rick Hawn stopped Ricardo Torloni via TKO in round one from strikes. Hawn landed a strong right hand ending it with hammer fists on the ground to cause the stoppage. In a featherweight feature fight that was also televised, Rad Martinez beat Douglas Frey by TKO in round one after a left hand dropped Frey leading to ground strikes causing the fight to end.
