3/30/2012

Hank Lundy (22-1-1) had a strong decision win over Dannie Williams (21-2) on ESPN Friday Night Fights. Lundy came out tight in round one and was knocked down by a left hook towards the end of the round. Williams showed power, but tired after a few rounds in which he slowed and mostly reached with punches. Lundy loosened up as the fight progressed and was repeatedly tagging Williams with the jab jerking his head back with each connect.

Judah Super Again with TKO Win

3/25/2012

Zab Judah (42-7) became Super Judah once again with an impressive TKO win over Vernon Paris (26-1) on NBC Sports. Judah came out strong from the beginning with fast hard punches in combinations. The younger 26 yr old Paris was completely ineffective. Judah ended the fight 26 seconds into round nine after he rocked Paris with a vicious left followed by quick accurate punches battering him into the corner leading to the referee jumping in to stop the fight.  It was an impressive and dominate performance. The bout was an IBF junior welterweight elimination to face the winner of Amir Khan vs Lamont Peterson.

Tomasz Adamek (45-2) beat Nagy Aguilera (17-7) by unanimous decision in an entertaining heavyweight fight that had two way action despite Adamek winning many of the rounds. Each fighter was stunned with Adamek being knocked off balance in the second round and late in the fourth, Aguilera was clearly wobbled by a left hook from Adamek. The fight settled some in the later half, but it still had plenty of action for a heavyweight bout. Adamek looked sharp in his return.

Another heavyweight match featured prospect Bryant Jennings (13-0) defeating veteran Siarhei Liakhovich (25-5) by TKO from doctor stoppage after round nine. Exchanges progressively intensified with the quicker Jennings doing the most damage and landing the most connects while boxing moving. By time round nine, Liakhovich was a beat up and depleted fighter that was continuing to take damage giving cause for the ring doctor to stop it when the round ended.

Garcia Defeats Morales & Kirkland Wins by Strange DQ Over Molina

3/24/2012

Danny Garcia (23-0) defeated Erik Morales (52-8) by unanimous decision for the WBC light welterweight title in the main event of HBO World Championship Boxing. Garcia controlled most of the fight, but Morales was very competitive. HBO commentators strongly favored Morales the first half of the fight until it became clear that Garcia was going to win. El Terrible was better early on than later and landed the jab very well including catching Garcia with some left hooks in round five, but Garcia still stole most of the early rounds.

By time the second half of the fight, Morales began to slow down and Garcia was landing cleaner shots. Garcia was able to catch the Mexican icon with a left hook to the chin that dropped him in round 11. Morales did give his opponent a bloody nose and a cut eye, but was never able to rally strong enough. Garcia just seemed to have a little more of everything than him from start to end. Unofficial scorecard from Harold Lederman of HBO had it 115-112 and Fight Night Blog scored it 117-110. The judges scores were 117-110, 116-112, and 118-109. The question now remains if Morales will decide to retire.

The co-feature junior middleweight bout ended with an odd disqualification giving James Kirkland (31-1) the win with Carlos Molina (19-5-2) up by three and five points on two scorecards when the fight stopped after round 10. Even Ann Wolfe trainer of Kirkland stated that she would have liked to seen it continue. Reported by HBO, Kirkland was also not willing to submit to a urine test before the fight and if he did not do immediately after the bout then his purse would be held .

Kirkland was less aggressive than usual early on and consequently was not very effective. Molina was outclassing his opponent and connecting with cleaner punches most the fight while constantly grabbing Kirkland's right arm. By round 10, Molina appeared to begin to weaken and Kirkland was desperately picking up the pace. At the end of the round, Kirkland knocked down Molina as the bell rang. Molina recovered okay, but there was confusion by both fighters about the knockdown on what to do and Molina's corner entered the ring appearing unaware that they were not supposed to. The referee motioned the corner man out of the ring and continued to count then signaled to both fighters that the round ended. After all of that, the referee decided to disqualify Molina for his corner entering which is technically a DQ, but was used with poor judgement here.

Mariusz Wach TKOs Tye Fields in Round 6

3/24/2012

In a battle of giants, the main event of iN Demand PPV in Atlantic, New Jersey showcased Polish boxer Mariusz Wach 6'7 (27-0) against Tye Fields 6'9 (49-5) with the Poland native coming away with the expected TKO win in round six. The match started slow with Fields holding his hands high and Wach boxing cautiously. By round three, Wach started landing solid punches. Throughout the next few rounds, he picked his moments mostly flurrying at the end of rounds. By the sixth round, the Polish fighter kept connecting with clean shots eventually hurting Fields with a straight right that dropped him. Fields did wobble up, but the referee chose to halt the fight. The bout was for the WBC International Heavyweight Title.

The final undercard featured a super featherweight match with Poland's Kamil Laszczyk (8-0) defeating Tevin Farmer (4-3) by unanimous decision. Laszczyk steadily came forward all bout. Farmer stayed competitive, but was out worked all fight. Tevin was also deducted a point for holding Laszczyk's arm which seemed like an overreaction by the referee since he was never warned.

Another heavyweight bout featured prospect Polish boxer Artur Szpilka (10-0) with a quick aggressive TKO win over Terrance Marbra (6-2). Szpilka is definitely an attention getter in the ring and walking into it in which he wore an orange prison uniform. Marbra failed to avoid Szpilka's devastating southpaw straight left hands that dropped him twice in the first round with the referee waving off the fight after the second knockdown. Szpilka fights in a crouching stance despite being 6'4.

In a light heavyweight match, Jerson Ravelo (20-6) upset Joey Spina (26-2-2) by split decision. Spina showed a lot of ring rust and could not find a rhythm. Ravelo's confidence grew as the fight progressed, but he did have problems with slipping on the logo in the middle of the ring. Both fought sloppy and both had solid connects leading to close scoring.

Stivens Bujaj (7-0) defeated Joshua Harris (8-6-1) by TKO in round two of a cruiserweight bout. Bujaj pressured Harris from the opening bell and knocked him down with a right hand in the middle of the second. Harris got up, but Bujaj continued with a barrage of punches causing stoppage by the referee.

Friday Quick Recaps: ESPN Friday Night Fights, ShoBox, & Bellator 62

3/24/2012

On ESPN Friday Night Fights, Roberto Garcia (30-3) defeated Antwone Smith (21-4-1) by unanimous decision. As usual for Smith, he yelped every time he punched throughout the fight which can be annoying to the audience. Garcia came forward while Smith boxed which was favorable for Garcia in a ring measured 15 ft 8 in by ESPN, but was officially listed as 16 ft wide. Smith occasionally had some good pop shots, but Garcia consistently landed the harder and more effective punches. In the undercard, James De La Rosa (21-1) survived a knockdown to come back to win against Tyrone Brunson (21-1-1).

In the ShoBox main event, Diego Magdaleno (22-0) defeated Fernando Beltran (36-8-1) by technical knockout in their super featherweight match. Magdaleno is a sharp puncher that was clearly faster and stronger than his opponent. Diego was knocked down in the fourth, but he came back very strong. Beltran was hit by a borderline low blow in the next round. By the seventh, Magdaleno was still coming strong evantually scoring a knockdown called when Beltran was only held up by the ropes after being walloped. Beltran got up and continued to try to fight, but his corner literally threw in the towel landing on the referee prompting him to stop the bout. The official stoppage was 2:28 into round seven.

In the co-feature for ShoBox, Johnny Garcia (12-0) defeated Yordenis Ugas (11-1) by split decision in a difficult fight to score. Ugas seemed to be more skilled and had more power in the first half of the fight including dropping Garcia in round 5. Garcia was a very busy and game fighter that ended the fight with more gas in the tank than Ugas which faded some late. Steve Farhood of Showtime scored the fight for Ugas, but was not critical of the decision.

Bellator 62 featured the lightweight quarterfinals tonight. In the final bout, Lloyd Woodard defeated Patricky Pitbull (favorite name of the night) by submission from a kimura in round two. Pitbull suffered a shot to the groin early in round one, but recovered and rocked Woodard later. However by the next round, Woodard hooked Pitbull into a kimura forcing him to tap apearing to dislocate his elbow in what was a competitive and entertaining bout.

The only fight to go the distance in the Bellator 62 lightweight quarterfinals was Thiago Michel Pereira Silva's win over Rene Nazare by split decision. In another quarterfinal, Brent Weedman at his lightest fighting weight ever defeated J.J. Ambrose via submission by shoulder choke in round two. This match involved a lot of grappling and wrestling with some meaningful strikes here and there. Also, Rick Hawn stopped Ricardo Torloni via TKO in round one from strikes. Hawn landed a strong right hand ending it with hammer fists on the ground to cause the stoppage. In a featherweight feature fight that was also televised, Rad Martinez beat Douglas Frey by TKO in round one after a left hand dropped Frey leading to ground strikes causing the fight to end. Here's a link to the non-televised results: Bellator 62 Fight Card.

This weekend is full of fights with nationally televised events on numerous networks including ESPN2, Showtime, HBO, NBC Sports Network, and MTV2/Epix. The weekend lineup wraps up Saturday night with a couple good matches on HBO World Championship Boxing featuring Erik Morales (52-7) vs Danny Garcia (22-0) and James Kirkland (30-1) vs Carlos Molina (19-4-2). Morales is an aging veteran facing upcoming contender Garcia and Kirkland is an all action fighter that guarantees an entertaining match against Molina which is undefeated in his last 12 bouts. In MMA, the Bellator 62 heavyweight tournament final Eric Prindle vs Thiago Santos has been scratched due to Santos being overweight at the weigh in and Prindle has been awarded the tournament winner.

Fight Night Blog typically list all fights that are televised in the United States and that are followed by FNB. Here is the rest of the weekend's schedule. Listed below are the main events, TV station, and time for each event. All times shown are Eastern TIme Zone.

HBO Boxing Recap: Martinez Stops Macklin with Laser Lefts on St Patrick's Day

3/17/2012

World Middleweight Champion Sergio Martinez (49-2-2) defeated Matthew Macklin (28-4) by TKO due to corner stoppage after 11 rounds. The first half of the fight had many lulls with occasional spurts of action. Macklin was a very game fighter through the first several rounds. He was able to grab some rounds and knock down Martinez in round seven on a punch that didn't hurt him but did send him down while off balance.

By 8 thru 10, Sergio was in tune and controlling the fight. By time the11th, it was apparent that Macklin was being overwhelmed by speed and noticeably tiring. The Irish-British Macklin was caught twice on the chin by laser left hands from Martinez in the last 20 seconds of round 11 leading to good reason for the corner to stop it with their fighter left bloodied and battered. The scorecards going into the last round were 103-103, 105-101, and 105-101 with the even score being Julie Lederman's.

In the televised undercard, Edwin Rodriguez (21-0) defeated Donovan George (22-2-1) by unanimous decision. Rodriguez was the counter puncher in the fight but still outworked while out connecting George in a competitive match. Larry Merchant of HBO graded Rodriguez's performance as an A-. It looked more like a B performance.

Here are recaps and the main event results of televised fights from Friday night.

ESPN Friday Night Fights main event was a short one with Kendall Holt (28-5) getting an easy TKO win over Tim Coleman (19-3). Holt's hands looked fast and he went to work immediately by knocking down Coleman with a perfectly placed left to the liver in the opening round. Round two was more domination by Holt with three knock downs of Coleman which forced the corner to throw in the towel. Coleman was never in the fight and did not look motivated. Roy Jones Jr made his debut as cornerman for Holt.

On ShoBox, Omar Figueroa (15-0-1) looked like a beast in his beatdown of Ramon Ayala (23-3-1). Figueroa threw around Ayala and landed hard body shots that led to a TKO in round two. According to ShoStats, Figueroa landed 19 body punches compared to only 2 for Ayala in less than two rounds. In the co-feature, Randy Caballero (14-0) defeated Jose Luis Araiza (29-6-1) by decision in a bout that was controlled early by Caballero, but Araiza settled in by mid-fight and took some late rounds.
